Electrical Vocabulary

Taking on board the message of this page and its companion page is the single most useful thing you can do to enhance your understanding of electricity.

If I say "The cat is silhouetted against the sky", a particular image comes to mind. If I now say "The cat looks a purple-ish brown from here", that begins to fill in some detail. Now I tell you that there is a mouse at the foot of the cat, and you are building a self-consistent image. If I then tell you that smoke is rising from the top of the cat, an element of puzzlement creeps in. Is there, perhaps an act of cruelty being perpetrated by a schoolboy with a burning glass or a blow torch? Has an accident of some sort occurred?
