gravitational force between two bodies diminishes with increasing
separation according to Newton's Law of Gravitation
where M and m are the masses of the two bodies involved, G is the Universal Gravitational constant, and r is the distance between the centres of the two bodies. This law is responsible for the better-known 9.81 N/kg for the Earth's gravitational field. Because r can never become infinite, the gravitational influence of a body never disappears, although it may become swamped at great distances by bigger local effects. |
